- 甲冑は平安時代の大鎧から胴丸、腹巻、さらには当世具足へと変化し、江戸時代を迎えた。戦乱のなくなった江戸時代後期にあっては、大鎧などを模した復古調の甲冑が多く制作された。大名家では、新藩主が藩祖の甲冑を模して新しい甲冑を作り、藩祖の権威を継承した。この甲冑は、付属する品から、紀伊徳川家第11代の徳川斉順（なりゆき）所用のものと判明している。斉順は第11代将軍徳川家斉の7男として生まれ、第10代紀伊藩主徳川治宝（はるとみ）の養子となり、紀伊徳川家を相続した。
