This is a fire hood worn by a samurai-class woman at the time of a fire evacuation. For women of the samurai-class, fire resistant clothing was a part of their trousseaux and a necessity when living in Edo. Compared to men's fire hood, women's fire hood is more colorful, with delicate embroidery and is in the shape of a tall eboshi.
With regards to this woman's fire hood, the part which covers the head is made of leather and the part which covers the neck, called ""shikoro"", is made of five kinds of fabric. Cloud-shaped wollen cloths in yellow, green and red, as well as silk, are placed over a flower-patterned dyed leather. Overall, the hood is luxuriously made and its elegant style is suitable for a woman of the samurai-class.
