解説/Description
The Great Kanto Earthquake, which ocurred around noon on September 1st, 1923 (Taishō 12), caused extremely severe fires instigated by strong winds that happened to be blowing in the Kantō Region at the time.
On that day, the donor's grandfather who was paying a vist to Naritasan, became separted from his family in Tokyo. Fortunately, he was able to reunite with his family by coincidence at Ueno Park the following day. After the fire ceased, he found the coins from the storehouse of his burnt down house. The coins were the only items he was able to retrieve.
Before the earthquake ocurred, the coins were kept in a wooden box. Metals which are thought to be nails and hinges on the box also melted, fusing to gether with the coins. We can also see charred wood on the melted metals. The item itself speaks of the severity of the fires caused by the earthquake.
