長板中形（ながいたちゅうがた）とは、江戸時代以来の型染め法で、長板を使用して布地の表と裏の両面に糊置きを施して染める技法をいう。中形とは、小紋に比べ中くらいの大きさの柄という意味で、浴衣に染められていることから浴衣の代名詞となっている。本資料群は、1955年（昭和30）国の重要無形文化財に指定された清水幸太郎氏（しみずこうたろう　1897～1988）の旧蔵品で、氏のご遺族から寄贈を受けたものである。清水幸太郎氏は、大正時代から昭和50年 代まで東京で浴衣の型付けを専業にしていた型付け屋で、型紙は幸太郎氏とその父で先代の吉五郎氏が型付けに使用したもの。和紙を重ねて柿渋を塗ったもので、小刀や錐で透かし彫りをし、模様が施されている。型紙の製作は江戸時代から現代まで伊勢地方で独占的に行っていたことから、「伊勢型紙」とも呼ばれた。これら型紙からは、明治後期から昭和期にかけての浴衣デザインの変遷を知ることができる。

Nagaita chūgata refers to a stencil dyeing technique since the Edo period to dye fabric after applying paste to the face and reverse sides of the fabric with nagaita stencils. Chūgata means a medium-sized pattern compared with the komon pattern and is a byword for yukata because chūgata patterns are dyed on the yukata. This material group was formerly owned by Shimizu Kōtarō (1897–1988), who was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Japanese government in 1955, and it was donated by his bereaved family. Shimizu Kōtarō was a stencil artisan who specialized in stenciling yukata in Tokyo from the Taishō era to the period from 1975 to 1984, and the stencils were used by Kōtarō and his father and predecessor, Kichigorō, for stenciling work. The stencils were made by layering washi paper and coating it with fermented persimmon tannin, accompanied by openwork patterns with small knives and gimlets. Since stencils have been produced monopolistically in the Ise district from the Edo period until now, they are also referred to as “Ise stencils.” These stencils show us the transition of yukata designs from the late Meiji era to the Shōwa era.
