井上家は、初代貫流左衛門（かんりゅうざえもん）を祖とする幕臣。初代貫流左衛門（1740～1812）は、武州忍藩士梅村家の出で、諸国を遊学して医術と砲術を修め、江戸で医業を開き貫流と号した。砲術の主な門弟には、著名な剣術家平山行蔵（子龍　1759～1829）がいる。
1808年（文化5）、貫流は幕府鉄砲方与力格として登用され、同年及び翌年の二度にわたり対露防衛のため蝦夷地へ渡った。その際貫流左衛門と改名。初代没後、次男末五郎（1790～1852）が改めて幕臣に抱え入れられ、二代貫流左衛門を名乗った。三代範之丞（1824～1848）は二代に先立ち早世、その子廉八（廉　きよし 1846～1914）が四代として跡を継ぎ明治維新を迎えた。四代廉は、幕府普請役から明治政府の財務官僚として活躍し、内閣会計局長・内閣恩給局長を歴任した。
本資料群は、初代から四代に至るまでの井上家代々日記を始め、貫流左衛門が残した砲術及び医学関係資料、さらに蝦夷地関係資料からなる。江戸後期から大正期までの長期にわたる下級幕臣家の歴史とその時代を通観することができる重要資料。

The Inoue family were vassals of the shogunate, whose founder was Kanryūzaemon Ⅰ. Kanryūzaemon Ⅰ (1740–1812) was from the Umemura family, retainers of the Oshi Domain in the Musashi Province, and studied across the country to learn medical science and gunnery. Subsequently, he practiced medicine in Edo and called himself Kanryū. His notable disciples in gunnery included Hirayama Kōzō (Shiryō, 1759–1829), a renowned fencer.
In 1808, Kanryū was appointed to teppōkatayorikikaku (a position related to gunnery and artillery) in the shogunate and went to Ezo twice, in 1808 and 1809, to defend against Russia. On that occasion, he changed his name to Kanryūzaemon. After the passing of Kanryūzaemon Ⅰ, his second son, Suegorō (1790–1852), was employed as a vassal of the shogunate and took the name Kanryūzaemon Ⅱ. Since the third generation, Norinojō (1824–1848), passed away prior to the second generation, Rempachi (Kiyoshi, 1846–1914), a son of the third generation, inherited the family headship as the fourth generation, and afterward the Meiji Restoration took place. The fourth generation, Kiyoshi, worked successfully as a financial bureaucrat in the Meiji government through fushinyaku (an overseer of public works) in the shogunate, and served as the Director of Cabinet Accounting Bureau and Director of Cabinet Pension Bureau.
This material group consists of diaries of the Inoue family, ranging from the first to the fourth generations, as well as materials related to gunnery and medical science and those related to Ezo left by Kanryūzaemon. These are important materials that enable us to outline the history of a lower vassal family and the period in which they lived, over an extended period from the late Edo period to the Taishō era.
